ABOUT MAXWELL
Where experience meets new technology
Our Story
The Maxwell Aircraft story starts with one entrepreneur and seaplane pilot who had repeatedly flown his Lake Buccaneer from Florida to Minnesota and concluded he only wanted to fly off the water from his lake cabin and around the neighborhood for fun. The problem was (and is) that these seaplanes are loud!
He quickly discovered the opportunity created by small, high-power, weight-saving electric motors. Seaplanes thrive on high power for getting out of the water; imagine 300 HP in a motor that only weighs 50 lbs!
Unfortunately, the reality of modern lithium-ion batteries being not nearly good enough soon became apparent.
Our Team
With backgrounds as seaplane pilots, as entrepreneurs, and in aerospace engineering, we quickly concluded that excellence in manufacturing would be key to our future success. We sought out those with the most experience to form Maxwell Aircraft.
Research continued on electric motors, gearboxes, inverters, battery management systems, and batteries. The research process also led to conversations with seaplane experts about the opportunity. At the same time, we awaited the birth of second-generation batteries with sufficient power to weight to make such a plane worth owning.
We knew that second-generation batteries would come with more than a dozen companies working on high power-to-weight batteries, so we took advantage of our research phase to discuss the principles that would make a great aircraft company.
